Engineering student's research resulted in IEEE Conference Paper
(April 1, 2009) -
Jesse Bumanlag, Pacific Computer Engineering major, conducted undergraduate research in the Fall 2008 semester that involved predicting hormone levels in people with diabetes using artificial neural networks. He collaborated with the Department of Medicine and Dialysis Center at San Joaquin General Hospital in Stockton resulting in an IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) conference paper, co-authored with Professor Zarei, Electrical Engineering Department, University of the Pacific and Dr. Ghazi, Dr. Frank, and Dr. Kapre from San Joaquin General Hospital. This paper, titled "Predicting Parathyroid Hormone Levels in Diabetic Hemodialysis Patients Using Neural Networks," was peer reviewed and accepted at the International Conference of Computing in Engineering, Science and Informatics (ICC). Jesse attended this conference in April '09 and presented the results of the project.
Professor Zarei comments, "Jesse worked tirelessly during this project, made several trips to the dialysis center at San Joaquin General Hospital to collect data on the patients at the center, and revised his paper multiple times before submission. It is a great achievement for Jesse to be able to present his work at ICC 2009 and to interact with other students, faculty and researchers in the emerging area of computing."
Jesse is from Tracy, CA and will be graduating in May 2009 with a B.S. in Computer Engineering and a Minor in Mathematics. He completed co-ops with Cisco Systems and Space Systems/Loral.
