Reynolds Art Gallery Continues to Host Exciting Exhibits through Spring 2009
The Reynolds Art Gallery continues to host a variety of artists throughout the school year, especially this spring.
The contemporary work of Northern California Painter, Mark Bowles was on display in January and February. This exhibit, two years in the making, was made possible by Visual Arts Professor Dan Kasser. Professor Kasser is a co-founder of the Reynolds Gallery, and has spent over twenty years curating exhibitions of regional and northern California artists for the University community. Such experience was beneficial in making the Mark Bowles exhibit possible. Students also played a large role in designing the exhibit, and one of Professor Kasser’s classes actually helped to hang the canvases.
The show, titled Following the Light, was a commemoration of Mark Bowles’ commitment to conventional yet modern paintings. Bowles is best known for his striking large-scale landscape paintings, and each of Bowles’ canvases included in the exhibit were richly painted to ultimately capture “the light”. A graduate of the Academy of Art in San Francisco, Institudio Allende in San Miguel De Allende, Mexico, and the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, California, Mark Bowles has been working in the Bay Area for thirty years.
Beginning March 2nd to April 10th the Reynolds Art Gallery is also hosting the exhibit In Dialogue with Ansel Adams. This includes: Ansel Adams: America, a national project that honors the work of Ansel Adams and his close relationship with America's natural landscape. The Reynold’s Gallery will exhibit 11 photographs by Adams, and other contemporary works by 9 local artists responding to his legacy. The work will premiere in Stockton in April 2009, the twenty-fifth anniversary of the photographer's death, and will continue at various venues, including Carnegie Hall, through the 2009-2010 seasons. Friday, March 27th, the Visual Arts Department hosted a catered reception for the community to begin the Ansel Adams: America events.
The gallery is located on South Campus, in the Art Department. It is open Tuesday to Friday from 9-5, and Saturday to Sunday from 1-5.
