Programs and Activities

The objectives of the John Muir Center are implemented through a variety of programs and activities sponsored and promoted by the Center.

Student Field Trips / Pacific M.O.V.E.

Link opens in new window M.O.V.E. (Mountains, Ocean, Valley Experience) is a unique first-year program designed to welcome new students to the Pacific community by introducing them to the concept of responsible leadership through participation in a series of environmental/service projects.

Freshmen are initiated to the program through a field trip at the beginning of the school year to Yosemite and other prominent natural environments in California. The John Muir Center is integrally involved in Pacific's M.O.V.E. program by advising and leading these trips associated with John Muir's legacy. The Center also supports field trips to the John Muir National Historic Site in Martinez, California.

Symposiums and Conferences

The John Muir Center hosts a regular California History Institute symposium devoted to John Muir's achievements or other aspects of regional/environmental studies. The California History Institute symposium was started at Pacific in 1954 by Dr. Rockwell Hunt.

April 2010 Symposium
John Muir: Naturalist & Scientist, April 22-24, 2010

What better way to celebrate John Muir's birthday (April 21) than to attend the spring symposium. Symposium events are free and open to Pacific students, faculty and staff.

Thursday, April 22 (Earth Day!): The symposium kicks off with a day-long field trip to the John Muir National Historic Site in Martinez, Muir's residence during his last years in California.

Friday, April 23: Academic papers on Muir's contributions in science and natural history will be read in Grace Covell Hall on the University of the Pacific Stockton campus. A luncheon and dinner with keynote speakers are also planned.

Saturday, April 24: Papers on Muir's promotion of mountaineering and outdoor recreation will be read, and the symposium will conclude with a luncheon and a keynote speaker.

More details will be forthcoming, and registration will start in February. In the meantime, for more information please contact the Director of the John Muir Center, Email icon W. R. (Bill) Swagerty.

John Muir Publications

Nature's Beloved Son book cover

A special publications program through the Center includes the John Muir Newsletter, which contains articles and book reviews.

The Center also houses a collection of books about John Muir, such as "Nature's Beloved Son: Rediscovering John Muir's Botanical Legacy" authored by Bonnie Gisel, a respected authority on the life and works of John Muir who was formerly an acting director of the John Muir Center.

Promotion of Green Initiatives on Campus

The John Muir Center encourages students to get involved in sustainability and green initiatives at Pacific. One avenue for involvement is the Students for Environmental Action (SEA)—a student club from the Earth & Environmental Sciences Department.

Special Events

The John Muir Center hosts special events, public workshops and educational events on John Muir, environmentalism and early California history.
