Security Alert - Calls Requesting Information about Fax Machine Models

(June 16, 2009) -

Some staff and faculty on campus have reported getting phone calls inquiring about specific details regarding the model of fax machines in their office.  These callers often will give vague information about who they are and why they need the information.  One particular caller identified themselves as from the "Shipping Office".  In most cases the caller ID number was blocked.  At this point the calls appear to be social engineering attempts to trick University faculty and staff into divulging confidential or internal information.  If you or your office has received any calls of this nature or if you have provided information to these callers please report them to the Customer Support Center (CSC) for further inquiry.

Contacts like these phone calls, emails, etc which asks for detailed information without proper identification or purpose should be reported to the CSC or the IT Security Office (Hotline - 209.946.7740 or via email itsecurity@pacific.edu).
