College of the Pacific

Environmental Studies

University-wide initiatives are continually underway to promote environmental awareness and protection in and around the campus—and across the planet. In addition to these efforts, the College of the Pacific offers a range of environmental programs to foster innovative solutions for sustainability in the generations to come.

The Environmental Studies program offers a multi-disciplinary approach to environmental issues. The program is overseen by the Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences

Earth & Environmental Sciences Department

The Earth & Environmental Sciences Department emphasizes active, hands-on, field-oriented approaches to the study of geology and environmental science. In addition to dynamic courses, the department offers a wide variety of exciting research, outreach and service experiences.

Students can earn a B. A. in Environmental Studies or a B.S. in Environmental Science. A Minor in Environmental Studies is also available.

There are other ways to get involved in environmental causes through the Earth & Environmental Sciences department, such as through the Students for Environmental Action (SEA) club—a group of students who want to make a difference on campus and within the community but also think globally by relating their actions to the bigger picture.

John Muir Center

The College of the Pacific's John Muir Center honors and celebrates the legacy of the country's most influential conservationist. The Center actively encourages greater utilization of the John Muir Papers—housed at the University—by the scholarly community.

The Center's objectives include fostering a closer academic relationship between Pacific and the larger community of scholars, students and citizens interested in regional and environmental studies.

The John Muir Center hosts special events, public workshops and educational events on John Muir, environmentalism and early California history.

Courses and Internships
The John Muir Center website lists courses available in the College that relate to John Muir or have an environmental emphasis. Students can also participate in internships through the John Muir Center.

Other Environmental Programs at Pacific

Pacific's School of Engineering and Computer Science now offers a Minor in Sustainability. Students in the program examine how the principles of sustainability may be applied to address issues such as globalization of the world's economies, continuing challenges with depletion of resources and increased global pollution.

The School of Engineering and Computer Science is also home to the University's Natural Resources Institute, which serves as a forum for full and open discourse on critical natural resource issues in California.
