Eberhardt School of Business News

Stories from the Street

(July 1, 2009) -

Eberhardt bachelor's degree candidates hit the internship streets in droves last summer with more than 50 undergraduates gaining experience in a myriad of industries. The usual suspects such as accounting firms, consumer goods makers, financial services and government agencies were among the representative employers. Two of our students profiled in brief in this issue each had a unique story to tell about their summer internship experience.

Edwin LindoEdwin Lindo '09 has not taken his college experience for granted. As a freshman he came into Pacific both to get a great education and play baseball for the Tigers. He may have had dreams of Major League Baseball at some point but other interests and priorities pushed his baseball interests aside early in Edwin's college experience. Edwin served as the University's ASUOP President. His spring 2008 semester was spent campaigning and lobbying his fellow Pacific students for their votes. Their confidence in Edwin helped to propel his pursuit of the summer internship he landed with the San Francisco District Attorney's Office.

Contemplating his career interests and post-bachelor's degree options, Edwin was leaning toward heading for law school after Pacific. To confirm this interest Edwin took the initiative to walk into the San Francisco DA's office early last summer and inquire about internship openings. He'd done his homework and found nothing posted on the Website but figuring he had nothing to lose, Edwin hand delivered his résumé and was granted an interview and offer on the spot. His summer spent as an intern with the DA's staff confirmed his interest in the law profession. Edwin is headed this fall to University of Washington School of Law in Seattle. The highlight of his internship experience was attending a luncheon in honor of then Democratic candidate for President, Barack Obama.

kate hutchinsonKate Hutchinson '09 has a passion for baseball! A San Mateo native, it's no wonder that Kate is a big fan of the San Francisco Giants When the Giants hosted All-Star Week in 2007 Kate wasted no time signing up as a volunteer. Kate was assigned to serve at FanFest for the week which gave her the unique opportunity to meet with the staff of several different baseball organizations. She then caught the attention of the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association (MLBPAA) who recruited her to spend the following summer stationed in Colorado Springs, CO but also touring around the country representing this non-profit group.

In addition to spending All-Star Week in New York City representing MLBPAA, Kate planned seven "Swing with the Legends" golf events in major US cities and four "Legends for Youth" baseball clinics. In addition to these events Kate planned from start to finish 16 pre-game on-field presentations at Major League Baseball games including the association's annual Heart & Hustle Award. Kate also co-developed and produced a semi-annual newsletter. Kate has been invited to spend a week in St. Louis this July working for the organization during All-Star Week. You can bet she won't pass up this offer!

While Kate's ambition to work for a professional baseball organization has been realized to a certain extent (she has worked for the Oakland A's in ticketing services since the 2007 spring season), her dream job is in a community affairs role with the San Francisco Giants. I've got my fingers crossed in knots for Kate since I too, am a Giants fan! I've no doubt that Kate will land this career of her dreams, if not sooner, than later. In addition to amazing experience she's already gained in this competitive industry, Kate was a Student Advisor at Pacific, a Special Events Intern for University Events and an officer three years running within her sorority, Delta Delta Delta. 
