"We have been working closely with the Mexican Consulate in Sacramento to offer a variety of Mexican art to the Stockton community during the academic year," said Arturo Ocampo, assistant provost for diversity at Pacific. "We are excited that we are able to host these Bunuel films and we hope the community is able to come out and see these wonderful movies."
Bunuel is often called "the father of cinematic surrealism." Many of his films are listed in numerous books as among the best films ever. Additionally, his style has been copied and studied by numerous other directors, including Alfred Hitchcock who once said that Bunuel was the best director ever. He was nominated for two Oscars but never won. He did win numerous other film awards, including the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award in 1977, numerous awards from the Cannes Film Festival and the British Academy of Films and Television Arts (BAFTA) award in 1974. Bunuel died in 1983 at the age of 83.
The films that will be shown are "El Gran Calavera" on Sept. 21, "La Hija del Engaño" on the 22nd, "Subida al Cielo" on the 23rd, "La Ilusión Viaja en Tranvía" on the 24th, and "Nazarín" on the 25th. The first four films will be shown at the Pacific Theatre, located in the McCaffrey Center in the middle of campus. The last film will be at the South Forum at San Joaquin Delta College. All show times start at 8 p.m. The films will include English subtitles.
