Men's Volleyball Tigers Battle Trinity Western University, but Fall Short, 3-2

In their second match of the Husky Dino Cup Tournament on Friday, October 16, the Pacific men's volleyball team was defeated by Trinity Western University by a score of 3-2.

The set scores for the match were: 25-20, 23-25, 25-21, 21-25, and 15-11.

In the first set of the match, Trinity Western had a 8-3 lead, but four straight points for the Tigers, including a kill by sophomore Chaz Hindsley (Northfield, Ill.). Later in the set, freshman Taylor Hughes (Fallbrook, Calif.) recorded a kill to bring the Tigers within one at 19-18. Trailing 21-19, Trinity Western scored three straight points to bring their score to 24-19. The Spartans would finish out the set, 25-20.

The Tigers out hit the Spartans .481 to .222 in the second set. With the score tied at 4-4, Pacific went on a five point run to take a 9-4 lead. Included in this rally was a kill by sophomore Sean Daley (Moorpark, Calif.), and two blocks for Daley and freshman Patrick Tunnell (Tucson, Ariz.). With the Tigers holding onto their lead at 20-18, a kill from both Hughes and senior Jason Borchin (Roseville, Calif.) along with a block by Borchin, Hindsley, and Nicolaas Schenk (Kamuela, Hawaii) boosted the score to 23-18. Trinity Western would tie the score at 23-23, but Schenk and Daley racked kills to secure the second set for the Tigers, 25-23.

Despite falling behind early in the third set, a four point rally brought the score to 18-16, to take the Tigers within two of the Spartans. Daley had two service aces and Schenk recorded a kill for the rally. Trinity Western started to widen their lead and a kill from Schenk to make the 24-21 would be the last point the Tigers would score in the set. Spartans won the third set by a score of 25-21.

There were eight tied scores during the first half of the fourth set. Pacific hit .381 during this set, compared to the Spartans .069. With Pacific down 16-15, four straight points brought the Tigers back on top, 19-15. Hughes and Borchin each recorded a kill during the run. Moments later, Pacific brought the score to 21-19 with a combined block by Hughes and Borchin. At 23-21, a kill recorded by Hughes followed by a Spartan error push the Tigers to take the set 25-21, forcing a deciding fifth set.

With the Spartans taking a quick 4-1 lead, the Tigers added three points to their score to tie the game up at 4-4. Trinity Western answered back with their own four point rally to bring the score to 8-4. Pacific threatened this lead at 13-7, when they rallied four points, which included a kill from Hindsley and an ace by senior Kevin Downing (Poipu, Hawaii) to bring the score to 13-11. The Spartans would close out the set 15-12 and the take the match 3-2.

Schenk led the match with 18 kills, while Hughes had a 11 kills and 10 digs. Aaron Vandenbrink led the Spartans with 16 kills.

The Tigers will be back on the court at 12:00 pm on Saturday, October 17 to take on UCLA in the final day of the Husky Dino Tournament.
