Pacific Men's Volleyball: Pacific Falls to UCLA, 3-0

Pacific dropped their final match of the Husky Dino Tournament on Saturday, October 17 against UCLA by a final score of 3-0.

The set scores for the match were: 25-20, 25-20, and 25-17.

Calgary, Alberta, Canada - In the first set, the Bruins got ahead early, but at 12-9 the Tigers knotted the score with three straight points including a service ace by Nicolass Schenk (Kamuela, Hawaii) and a kill from Taylor Hughes (Fallbrook, Calif.). At 21-16, a kill from Jason Borchin (Roseville, Calif.) followed by another Tiger point brought the score to 21-18. But Pacific could not get another rally going and dropped the first set by a score of 25-20.

There were seven tie scores during the first fourteen points of play during the second set. With the scored tied at 7-7, UCLA scored three straight to give them a lead of 10-7. Pacific answered back by scoring two, but still trailed 10-9. Down 15-13, Patrick Tunnell (Tucson, Ariz.) racked a kill to bring the Tigers within one again at 15-14. UCLA answered back by scoring three straight which was followed shortly by another three point rally, taking the score to 23-16. Two kills from Clay Ostrander (Wheaton, Ill.) were amongst the Tigers final four points of the set, as UCLA took the set, 25-20.

The first three points for the Tigers in the third set were scored from kills from Ostrander. With the score tied 5-5, the Bruins scored three straight, gaining a lead which the Tigers would never overcome. Trailing 14-9, Sean Daley (Moorpark, Calif.) racked a kill and a sideout for the Pacific. The Tigers could not turn get in the rhythm and get a rally started and lost the final set by a score of 25-17 and the match 3-0.

The Tigers were led by nine kills from Daley, seven from Ostrander, and by Borchin who hit .833, who racked five kills in his six attempts.

The Bruins were led by Nick Vogel who had a match-high of 10 kills. The Tigers will be back for more preseason action at the USC Fall Tournament on November 6 and 7.
