Pacific women's volleyball: Engelhardt Named American Volleyball Scouting Report Global Player Of The Week
(October 19, 2009) -
Leading the Tigers to a split of their matches over the weekend, junior Svenja Engelhardt (Sinsheim, Germany) was named the American Volleyball Scouting Report Global Player Of The Week for the week ending on October 18. The junior was the eighth recipient of the award this season and the first Tiger to earn the honor awarded to international players playing collegiate volleyball.
Each Monday during the fall, one collegiate player originally reported as a recruit by AVSR is named AVSR Player of the Week for her cumulative performance during the current season.
For the week, Engelhardt paced the Tigers with 28 kills while hitting .290 and averaging 2.80 kills per set. In addition she posted four service aces and 20 digs as the Tigers played a pair of five-set matches on the road at UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly. In the loss to the Gauchos, Engelhardt posted nine kills and five digs while also serving up three aces.
Despite falling the previous night, Engelhardt rebounded on Saturday to lead the Tigers to a comeback five-set win over the Mustangs. In the match, Engelhardt led the Tigers both offensively and defensively as she posted her fifth double-double of the season tallying 19 kills and 15 digs. The 19 kills finished one off her season high of 20 set last week against Long Beach State. The 15 digs proved to be a season-best total for the junior outside hitter and was one off tying her career best mark.
In the past two weeks of play, Engelhardt has picked up her level of play on the court for the Tigers as over the last four matches she has had team highs in kills and aces while attacking at a .364 rate (59 kills, 11 errors, 132 swings). In addition, Engelhardt is atop the Big West this year with 32 aces (0.46/set).
