Pacific Women's Tennis: Tigers Power Through Regional Tournament

(October 24, 2009) - Four Pacific womens tennis athletes picked up wins in the first day of the 2009 Wilson/ITA Northwest Regional Championships on Friday. No. 12 seed Jenifer Widjaja (Sao Roque, Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Kateryna Nezhura (Kiev, Ukraine) made use of their first round byes, defeating their opponents to advance to the round of 32.

 

Widjaja defeated Molly Aloia of St. Marys 6-2, 6-1 and Nezhura handed Stanfords Jennifer Yen a loss in straight sets 6-1, 6-1.

 

Also picking up wins were Christina Goehl (Karlsruhe, Germany) and Sasha Fisher (Southampton, Bermuda). Goehl worked through Cals Catie Visico quickly, 6-0, 6-1, but Fisher had a tougher time with Kelsey Knight of Eastern Washington University.

 

After winning the first set 6-3, she could not hold onto the second and fell 4-6. Fisher then outlasted Knight in the third set 6-1 to win the match and join Goehl in the round of 64.
