David Kauper

Teaching Philosophy

I am a consultant to the students as they invest in human capital and my job is to help them learn—learn economics, learn to think critically and learn to learn. Success in these goals can be achieved with purpose, passion and believability. There are many ways to motivate students, but one powerful way is to link economic theory to the world around them. In every lecture and for every topic, I use news articles and/or several examples to demonstrate these links. Several homework assignments require the application of theory to real events. In introductory courses, we also conduct in-class experiments.

Recognizing the links can give students purpose as they see how the theory can be used, it can provide passion as they realize how much of the world can be understood and it can generate believability as the students discover how much economic theory is in fact consistent with their own observations. As the students learn about the economics of their world, they develop valuable skills that will earn them a high return on their investment at University of the Pacific.
