The California Delta

The  California Delta  covers more than 1,000 miles of waterways covering 738,000 acres in six counties in Northern California.

The convergence of five major rivers, the Delta carries 47% of California's water runoff. The Delta is also home to:

  • 230 species of birds
  • 150 species of flowering plants
  • 52 species of fish
  • 45 species of mammals

You can participate in a variety of water-related activities on the Delta including:

  • Water skiing
  • Fishing
  • Houseboating
  • Sailing (one of the most respected places to get sailing certification is in the deep water channel of the San Joaquin River because of the wide variety of wind conditions)
  • Bird watching
  • Jet skiing
  • Motor boating
  • Sailboat racing
  • Swimming
  • Wind surfing
