Steve Anderson
Steve Anderson has been associated with the Brubeck Institute since Fall 2000 when he came to the University of the Pacific as Dean of the Conservatory of Music. He has served on and chaired the Institute’s Advisory Board, produced the 2006 and 2007 Brubeck Festivals, served as acting Director from 2005-2007, and became Director in April 2007.
Dr. Anderson has performed throughout the United States, Eastern and Western Europe, and in Australia. He has performed as a soloist on tenor, alto, and Baroque trombones, chamber musician with brass quintets and Renaissance and Baroque ensembles, with military bands, and in symphony orchestras. His research and creative activity has focused on the trombone, both in historical and contemporary usage and in soloistic and ensemble formats. He has edited, written and lectured about, and published early works by composers such as Marini, Muller, Tuma, Schmelzer, Dario Castello, Giovanni Picci, and Cesare. He has also worked with contemporary composers such as Jean Belmont, Thom Ritter George, Walter Hartley, Jiri Laburda, Torsten Nilsson, Luis Szaran, John Prescott, and David Uber in the creation of new works for the solo alto trombone.
Prior to coming to Pacific, Dr. Anderson was with the University of Kansas for 23 years as professor of trombone and Chairman of the Department of Music & Dance. He has also held positions at Louisiana State University and the Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw, Poland. He holds degrees from Southwestern College in Kansas, Louisiana State University, and the University of Oklahoma. He was named a Distinguished Alumni Fellow by the University of Oklahoma in 1997. He holds memberships in the International Trombone Association (President 1986-8), Historic Brass Society (Board of Directors), International Association for Jazz Education, Music Educators National Conference, Phi Mu Alpha-Sinfonia, Pi Kappa Lambda, Phi Kappa Phi, and Phi Beta Delta. He has also served as a visiting evaluator for accreditation for the National Association of Schools of Music.
