Personal Safety and Awareness

Awareness, prevention and involvement are the most effective means of dealing with the problem of crime. An involved and aware community, in a cooperative effort with the police, can do much to prevent crime and help insure a safe and secure campus.

Safety Suggestions

  • Value your safety and the safety of others.
  • Secure your valuables, keep doors locked.
  • Employ common sense and be aware of your surroundings.
  • Plan your route. Take well-lighted, busy walkways whenever possible.
  • Never take shortcuts through poorly lighted areas.
  • Don't walk alone.
  • Take advantage of University's free escort service.
  • If you must walk alone, walk near the curb.
  • Have your keys ready before you get to your apartment or car.
  • Never accept a ride from a stranger.
  • On campus students should not allow anyone into their residence halls or apartments without first asking for proper identification.
  • For individuals who commute to the campus, we discourage you from keeping valuables in view in your car including clothing, loose change or other personal items. Secure valuables in the trunk/out of sight.
  • Be alert and cognizant of your surroundings.
  • If you go out for a late night snack or study break, go with a friend, not alone.
  • Walk purposefully. Look confident. Watch where you are going. Be alert to your surroundings.
  • Use well-lighted, well-traveled routes. Avoid short-cuts through isolated areas.
  • Lock all doors and close all windows when leaving your car, whether it is for a few minutes or for several hours.
  • Have keys ready when you approach your car. Check the car for intruders before entering and lock your door immediately after getting into your car.
  • Always lock your bike or motorcycle when leaving it unattended, even if it is only for a few minutes. Use the U-shaped high security lock whenever possible.
  • If you witness a crime, call Department of Public Safety immediately.
  • List only first initials and last name in telephone directories.
  • Hang up immediately on obscene telephone calls.
  • Don't keep large sums of money in your office, dorm room, study area or apartment.
  • Lock doors and windows, even if you are just going out for a minute. If you are a victim of a crime or become aware of any suspicious circumstances, call Department of Public Safety immediately at 6-3911 or 209.946.2537.
