The Brubeck Fellowship Program 2008-2009

The Brubeck Fellowship Program is a one- or two-year full-scholarship program in jazz performance for five musicians who have just graduated from high school. These individuals, known as the Brubeck Fellows, comprise the Brubeck Institute Jazz Quintet. The Institute provides complete tuition for all course work, on-campus room and board, airfare to and from campus at the beginning and end of each semester, private instruction on each person’s primary instrument, access to selected University of the Pacific and Conservatory of Music courses, facilities for rehearsal and performance, performance and outreach opportunities, and travel, lodging, and meals for Institute-sponsored events.

The Brubeck Fellows are expected to participate in all activities in which attendance is required, complete all assignments given by all instructors and clinicians, provide and maintain their own instruments at their own expense, comply with the University of the Pacific Honor Code in all respects, always present themselves in a positive and professional manner, and participate for the full duration of the program.

Musicians who are already enrolled in another college or university are not eligible to apply to the Fellowship Program.

The Audition Process

Brubeck Fellowship recipients are selected through a two-round audition process. The first round is adjudicated by a panel of jazz artists who listen to the recording submitted by the applicants. The second round is a live audition that will take place at Yoshi’s Jazz House in Oakland, CA on a date to be determined. Results will be announced approximately two weeks after the live audition. Travel expenses for the finalists are provided by the Institute.
