Building Evacuation
In the event you must evacuate a building, please abide by the following:
- You must treat every alarm as if it is signaling an actual fire. You must evacuate
the building in a timely manner.
- Feel your door before leaving your room. Do not open it if it feels warm. A
warm door may indicate smoke and flames on the other side.
- If your door is warm or if the hallway is filled with smoke stay in your room
with the door closed. Seal cracks around the door with towels or sheets to keep
the smoke from entering the room.
- If smoke enters your room, open one window slightly. Hang a sheet or towel
out the window to indicate your exact location to fire fighters.
- If you cannot open a window, remain close to the floor. The best breathing
air is about 18" above the floor.
- If your door does not feel warm, open it cautiously to check for smoke in the
hallway.
- Proceed to the nearest exit if hallways are passable. Close the door behind
you.
- After you leave the building, keep a safe distance away and do not interfere
with the Fire Department or Public Safety operations.
- Notify emergency personnel of any persons trapped in the building or having
difficulty exiting.
