College of the Pacific
Welcome to the Gender Studies Program
Students Laura Proctor, Julia Valle and Michiko "Misha" Maggi (left to right) are recent graduates of the Gender Studies Program.
The Gender Studies Program at Pacific is an interdisciplinary program that involves a variety of courses in different disciplines-art history, biology, classics, English, French, history, psychology, religion, sociology and sport sciences-dealing with issues of gender.
Our program offers a minor to students interested in the study of gender. Students also have the option to work on a self-designed major in Gender Studies in consultation with their faculty adviser(s) and the Director of the Gender Studies Program.
Through the Gender Studies Program we invite you to explore:
- The social construction of masculine and feminine identities
- How gender intersects with nationality, race, ethnicity and class
- The way in which gender identities are redefined over time
- Gender representations in art, film and literature
- How gender impacts the practice of science, health and medicine
By exploring the relationship between gender identity and cultural meaning, we prepare students to think comparatively, structurally and critically about their experiences and impact on the world.
Faculty and students involved in the program are committed to extracurricular activities as well. We organize and support a variety of events pertaining to gender and diversity, including guest lectures, art shows, student research conferences, film showings and leadership conferences. We often collaborate with the Ethnic Studies Program, the Humanities Center, the PRIDE Center and other groups on campus on many of these activities.
The dialogue we foster among the liberal arts, natural sciences and the professional schools enriches the intellectual life of Pacific's students and faculty, as well as our surrounding community.
